Our notes
Our LDN Sneakers have been over a year in the making, working with leading shoe component manufacturers across Europe to create one of the most sustainable shoes on the planet — a sneaker made only with biodegradable materials.
It hasn't been an easy journey. Many of the solutions we developed to make a fully biodegradable sneaker hadn't been seen before; these are genuinely at the cutting edge of sustainable footwear. And they're not only super sustainable — they're great to look at and comfortable to wear.
The LDN is built on a new WVS sneaker silhouette with a low-cut ankle shape and laces that run low down the vamp — something we've had many requests for, and we're pleased it's finally here.
The uppers are a Tencel™ knit weave — a natural fibre derived from sustainably grown wood sources (FSC®), harvested from certified and controlled sources. They mould around your feet, breathable and lightweight, and they're fully washable by hand or in a short cool machine wash inside a towel to protect them from the drum. Inside, the Tencel™ and organic cotton mix linings are really soft, so you can wear them with or without socks — they let air circulate to keep your feet cool, and wick moisture away to keep them dry and fresh.
Underfoot, wood fibre and natural latex insoles sit on Apinat BIO® outsoles for cushioning, shock absorption and traction as you walk. Even the components you don't see are part of the story — Tencel™ laces, lace tips, padding, tape and stitching, and compressed cardboard toe puffs, counter and insole board (FSC®).
The whole shoe is certified compostable and biodegradable under industrial, home, soil and marine conditions — it can fully revert back to nature — compliant with DIN CERTCO, Vinçotte and US BPI compostability standards, with Apinat BIO® outsoles meeting EN 13432, EN 14995 and US ASTM D6400.
- Upper
- One-piece knitted Tencel™ uppers – soft, breathable and naturally moisture-wicking, with a low-cut ankle and contrast knit pattern stripes on each side
- Lining
- Grey woven Tencel™ linings – very soft against your feet, breathable and moisture-wicking to keep them fresh and dry
- Insole
- Wood fibre and natural latex insoles – naturally breathable and flexible, cushioning your feet while holding their shape over time
- Outsole
- Apinat BIO® sneaker outsole – a biodegradable bioplastic made from renewable raw materials, giving cushioning, shock absorption and traction as you walk, and breaking down at end of life instead of persisting for centuries
- Laces
- Laces in Tencel™ – a natural fibre made from sustainably grown eucalyptus, strong and soft to the touch
- Shank
- No shank – a soft, flexible build that moves with your feet
- Construction
- Strobel construction – the upper is stitched directly to a soft textile base, with the sole bonded underneath. With no rigid board or stiffeners inside, it flexes naturally with your foot and stays light underfoot
- Water Resistance
- Not water-resistant – the knitted Tencel™ uppers are open-weave and breathable, so rain will pass straight through to your feet. Best kept for dry days and warm weather – the breathability that lets air in is the same reason water gets in.
- Width
- D width fitting – a slightly wider fit with more volume than standard

I have been wearing trainers, and minimalist shoes for some years, but I reflected on my ongoing contributions to what seems like the endless heap of waste that my life is generating. Anyhow, I am probably preaching to the choir here, so I became aware of these beauties from The Ethical Consumer magazine. I thought I'd take a chance, and I think that they are grea. However, they are definitely a little heavier than I am used to. I've only had them for a few months so far, and it has been over a mild winter where I live, but they have performed really well. I wear them daily and so far all is going great. I got the dark tops with the white soles, and these work fine for jeans, and shorts, which are only two types of leg covering I wear these days. A solid style and solid construction. Really happy so far. Thank you for giving me the chance to reduce my impact, and for preventing me from being ostracised by those around me, which can occur (at least to me) when attempting to make more ethical choices.
Long term Wills customer, and this won't change that. The idea of biodegradable shoes is just brilliant. However, these shoes aren't really designed to last very long (which I guess is half the point, but for the price, you would think they would last a few years) I have had mine since March, and they're already quite worn out.
I give them four stars, cause I'd rather pay for biodegradable shoes that don't last as long, than leather shoes that last for years, but I think there is some room for improvement.
Also mine are grey and they don't seem to exist anymore, so it would have been nice to be able to buy more grey when they are destroyed completely (I use my shoes until the last possible moment)
Good idea, beautiful shoes, with a bit more durability, these would be the best trainers I ever bought.
I really like these shoes. I love the concept and the shoes are just like good normal sneakers. I have very wide feet, the shoes seem a bit thighter than the other Will‘s I have.
I got these ones as a gift from my girlfriend (she's the vegan one) and have been rockin' them non-stop ever since. Nobody can believe me when I tell them they're vegan. They're so comfortable, easy to match and beautiful. Only thing is that they're a bit hard to clean, as the fabric is not so stain-friendly.
